CHAPTER SIX

On Friday night, Emily headed back over to the Stevens Fine Art Gallery for the official raffle. She’d worked on her blog quite a bit, and in between she’d managed to get a lot of rest, but she still wasn’t feeling completely happy. After all, Moonlight in her Hair was still missing.

“Emily!” Lily, with Finnegan on a leash at her side, wrapped her arm around her favorite volunteer. “I’d thought about calling you several times after I’d heard what happened to Mr. Lowe! Someone told me you were the one who found him. Is it true?”

“Well.” Emily bobbed her head from side to side, trying to decide how to answer. “I guess I can admit that I had some suspicions about him. I thought I might get a little bit of helpful information if I showed up there, but I’m afraid that doesn’t bring back the stolen painting that we’ve been most concerned for.” She looked to the center of the room, where the easel that had once held Mr. Elliott’s painting still stood empty. The glass bowl next to the easel was filled to the brim with raffle tickets, not that they did anyone any good at this point.

Lily frowned as she, too, looked at the empty spot. “It’s unfortunate, and it means that we can’t actually have the drawing for that particular painting. I’ve spoken with Mr. Stevens, and he’s agreed to hold the money in trust for us in case the painting is found. If it isn’t, well, then I suppose I’ll have to call every person that put in a ticket to see if they want their money back.”

“And what about the other pieces?” Emily asked hopefully. “Are the proceeds going to be enough for the addition?”

Pursing her lips, Lily shook her head. “I don’t think so. Unfortunately, Moonlight was the one thing everyone truly wanted. But we still have a good start, and we can always do another fundraiser of some sort.”

“Yes, that’s true. I’ve been trying to learn as much about the process as possible, so it might be something I can help you with.” She wondered if Anita would have any good connections at the country club, people with plenty of money to throw around who wanted to make themselves look good. It might be the thing that would help them get past the missing painting, although it wouldn’t be a quick solution.

The crowd that’d shown up for the drawing wasn’t nearly as big as it’d been on the opening night of the raffle. People milled in front of the paintings, but they no longer looked at them with light and enthusiasm in their eyes. They’d already seen them and paid for their tickets, and even though there were some wonderful pieces here, they weren’t as exciting as the brilliant gold tones of Victor Elliott’s painting. They had also chosen not to serve any refreshments this time, to save what little bit of money there was coming in.

Even so, the local news
